College History

Govt. College of Physical Education, was established in 1950 at Walton, near the Provisional headquarter of Boy Scouts Association. In 1960  Govt. College of Physical Education was shifted to the present premises near Qaddafi Stadium Lahore. Lt. General Bakhtiar Rana, Commander, No. 1 Corps, laid down the foundation stone of this college building on Jun, 11, 1960. The total land of the college as reported in the college record is approximately  136 Kanals.

Govt. College of Physical Education was the only college of its kind that equipped with modern indoor gymnasium and outdoor facilities. Initially, Senior and Junior Diploma in Physical Education were offered in this college. Later on in 1981, M.A in Physical Education was introduced, which is successfully continued to-date. At post graduate level the college was affiliated with University of the Punjab, Lahore.

Initially Government College of Physical Education, Lahore worked as co-education institution. Later, in 1972, the male and female institutions were established separately i.e. Government College of Physical Education for Boys, Gulberg Lahore and Government College of Physical Education for women, Township Lahore.

In September 2007, Govt. College of Physical Education for Boys (situated near Qaddafi Stadium Lahore) was renamed as Government College for Boys Gulberg, Lahore by the Government of the Punjab. The newly established Government College, Gulberg, Lahore was designed for both General Education (Intermediate, I Com., Graduation and Post-Graduation) and Physical education. MA Physical Education was kept as the main-stream discipline of this college.

In 2016, Nomenclature of MA Physical Education was changed to MSc Physical Education by University of the Punjab, Lahore. Master in Physical Education is the oldest program, which is running in this college. No other Public sector college of Punjab is offering this type of program in Physical Education and Sports Sciences. Students from all over Pakistan have been studying in this college since 1950. This college has produced hundreds of graduates and players, serving in the field of education and sports all over the Pakistan and overseas as well. M.A Islamic Studies has also been introduced in 2015.

In 2021, Nomenclature of the college changed from Government College for Boys Gulberg to Government Graduate College after induction of four years bachelor degree Program.

After renaming Govt. College of Physical Education in 2007 as Government College (Boys) Gulberg, a new block was also constructed in this college in 2012. The need of new academic block was the result of increasing student’s enrollment and induction of new academic program. The academic activities both for Physical education as well as general education were held in old building and new building. The College has also been offering admission in evening classes since 2012.

 Since 2021, four years bachelor degree programs have been started in 6 disciplines. All Bs programs were shifted in old building. The available rooms were not sufficient to cope with sections of the student and to run the college at proper juncture. In order to meet with BS level requirement four more rooms were constructed in 2022. In 2023 permission to start Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and BS English has granted by HED.   Because of increasing demand of higher education and general education of the adjoining area and to meet the current and future requirements of the education, we need an additional academic blocks, separate labs for associate and BS degree programs and general education.

Unfortunately Sports Board Punjab in spite of their weak stance has claimed its right on college land several times in recent past. In 2019 Sports Board Punjab requested to Secretary HED for no objection certificate for 10 Kanal college land for the establishment of sports Scholl in the premises of Government College for boys, Gulberg, Lahore. However HED has not granted NOC.

                     College enrollment has been increased in recent past and it is now 3300. Unfortunately college is still lacking in important infrastructure and facilities and is striving for achieving our missing facilities.  In months of the year 2023, while the college were moving towards achieving its objectives. Again in October, 2023  Sports board Punjab claimed over college land and  demanded  for 11 kanal college land, including the old academic block of college for the establishment of their alleged sports Institution, at the premises of the Government Graduate College for Boys, Gulberg, Lahore.

In order to resolve the issue of land between college and sports board, the higher government authorities decided to transfer 11 Kanal college land including our old academic block to the Sports Board Punjab. In the said academic block BS Physical education and 5 other BS programs were running. The old building of the college was comprised of class rooms, teacher’s room, admin rooms, audio video lab, fitness lab, proposed BS computer lab, gymnasium and wash rooms etc. Since 1961 thousands of students have studied in this building and still hundreds of students were studying. All these students have emotional attachment with this building. Similarly past and present teachers of this college also have emotional relationship with this building.

The handing over the academic block on 29-11-2023 certainly damaged the current academic programs and the future vision of the college. It is hoped that new academic block and sports gymnasium will be constructed soon as committed by higher authorities at the time of handing over the college building / college land to the sports department Punjab.
